Migaku is a favourite among serious immersion learners, especially for Japanese and Korean. Its browser extension works on Netflix, YouTube and ordinary web pages. You look words up as you go, turn the sentences you want into flashcards, and review them with its built-in spaced repetition. If you enjoy building your own deck, it's a good choice.

But the extension lives in a browser. It doesn't run inside the Stremio app or on a TV. And mining sentences is work: you choose every card yourself. If Stremio is your player, or you want the cards chosen for you, you need something else.

This page covers what BingeLingo does, how it differs from Migaku, and when each one is the better fit.

Migaku is a product of its own developers; BingeLingo is not affiliated with it, or with Stremio. Their features and prices change, so check their site for the current details.

Migaku vs BingeLingo: the core difference

Migaku gives you tools to mine. You watch, notice a sentence worth keeping, and make a card from it. You decide what to learn.

BingeLingo does the picking. It chooses a few useful words per ten minutes, puts the translation in the subtitle line, and builds the quiz and the review schedule for you.

One gives you control. The other takes away the effort. Which matters more depends on you.

Choose Migaku if…

  • You watch Netflix or YouTube in a browser, and read a lot on the web too.
  • You want full control over which sentences become cards.
  • You want to look up any word, not just the ones chosen for you.
  • You're at a level where mining is fast, because most of each sentence is already familiar.

Choose BingeLingo if…

  • You watch in Stremio, especially on a TV or Android device.
  • You've tried sentence mining and stopped because it turned TV into homework.
  • You're a beginner: Bridge mode keeps your own language as the base, so you can follow the plot while picking up words.
  • You want the review done for you, with no deck to build.

Is automatic word selection as good as sentence mining?

For a dedicated miner, probably not on its own. Choosing your own sentences means every card is one you care about, and that's hard to beat.

But the best system is the one you keep using. Many learners set up a mining workflow, build a few hundred cards, then drift away because every episode takes twice as long. If that sounds familiar, a few words per ten minutes with an automatic quiz is a lower bar that you'll clear more often. The quiz matters as much as the words: testing yourself beats re-reading for long-term memory (Roediger & Karpicke, 2006). The full write-up is here.

Can you use Migaku and BingeLingo together?

Yes, and for Anki users it works well. Mine actively on your laptop when you have the energy. On the evenings you'd rather just watch, use Stremio with BingeLingo, then export those words as an Anki deck so everything ends up in one place.

Common questions

Does Migaku work with Stremio?

Migaku's extension is built for a browser, on sites such as Netflix and YouTube. It doesn't run inside the Stremio app on a desktop, phone or TV. If you use Stremio Web in a browser, check their site for whether it's supported. Otherwise, you need a subtitle add-on.

Can I still use Anki with BingeLingo?

Yes. BingeLingo exports your vocabulary as an .apkg deck, with the subtitle line on each card. Exporting again updates the cards you already have.

Do I have to pick the words myself?

No. BingeLingo picks a few per ten minutes based on your level. If you want to choose every sentence yourself, Migaku is the better tool for that.

Does BingeLingo support Japanese and Korean?

Yes, both. Start with our guides to learning Japanese with Stremio, learning Japanese with anime and learning Korean with Stremio.
