Stremio is already a great place to watch in another language: it plays almost anything, and subtitles arrive through add-ons. What it doesn't do on its own is teach you anything. You watch, you follow along or you don't, and the next morning the words are gone.
This guide shows how to turn Stremio into a language-learning player with BingeLingo, a free subtitle add-on. Setup takes about two minutes, and after that you learn by picking a subtitle track, exactly as you do today.
What you need
- Stremio, on desktop, Android, Android TV, or Stremio Web. It's a free player; get it from stremio.com if you don't have it yet.
- A free BingeLingo account. The free plan includes 5 learning titles (one title is one movie or one episode), and Dual subtitles are unlimited on every plan.
- Something to watch that has subtitles in your native language, the language you're learning, or both. More on why this matters below.
Step 1: Create your account and choose your languages
Sign in to BingeLingo and open your dashboard. You'll set four things:
- Native language: the one you already understand. Translations are written in it.
- Learning language: the one you want to practise. BingeLingo supports more than 60, from Spanish and Japanese to Icelandic and Swahili.
- Comfort level: how much you already know. This decides which words count as useful to you. A beginner learning Spanish gets puerta and comer; an upper-intermediate learner gets words they probably haven't met yet.
- Vocabulary density: how often a new word appears. Light, Balanced, and Intensive allow roughly 2, 4, and 6 words per ten minutes, and never more than one per subtitle line.
If you're unsure, start with the defaults. You can change them later.
Step 2: Install the add-on in Stremio
Click Create Stremio install link. You get three ways to install:
- App: Open in Stremio. Opens the Stremio desktop or Android app and asks you to confirm the install. This is the easiest.
- Web: Install. For Stremio Web in your browser.
- Manual: Copy link. Copies the add-on URL. In Stremio, go to Add-ons, paste it into the search box (Add-on Repository URL), and press Install. Use this on TVs or anywhere the other buttons don't open.
Your install link is private. It's tied to your account, so don't post it publicly. You can create separate links for different devices and revoke any of them from your dashboard.
Step 3: Play something and pick a BingeLingo track
- Start a movie or episode in Stremio.
- Open the subtitle (CC) menu in the player.
- Pick a BingeLingo track for your learning language.
The first time you choose a Bridge or Immersion track for a title, BingeLingo builds it, which can take a moment. If it doesn't show up straight away, close the subtitle menu, open it again, and reselect the track. Rewatching a track that already exists never counts against your allowance.
Which subtitle mode should you choose?
BingeLingo offers three tracks. You can switch between them mid-episode from the subtitle menu.

A good rule: Bridge if you're watching to relax, Immersion if you're watching to learn. Dual is useful for a scene or two, but it's the mode most likely to turn into reading your own language for 45 minutes. The research on why is here.
Why a mode sometimes doesn't appear
Each mode is built from existing subtitle tracks for that title:
- Bridge needs a subtitle track in your native language.
- Immersion needs one in your learning language.
- Dual needs both.
If a mode is missing, the title (or that particular release) doesn't have the source track it needs. Trying another release of the same title often fixes it.
Step 4: After the credits: recap and review
This is the part that makes watching count.
- Recap quiz. Every Bridge or Immersion title you watch leaves a 12-question recap on your dashboard: recognition, recall, listening, and fill-in-the-blank questions built from the actual subtitle lines. It stays playable for seven days, while the scenes are still fresh.
- Vocabulary bank. Words from the recap go into your bank, each one keeping the line you heard it in. A 10-word daily review brings back the ones you're about to forget, at expanding intervals of 1, 3, 7, 14, 30 and 60 days.
- Anki export, if you already use Anki: download your words as an
.apkgdeck with the subtitle line on each card.

Troubleshooting quick reference
- The app link doesn't open Stremio: update Stremio, or use the Manual link and paste it into the Add-ons screen.
- BingeLingo is missing on another device: make sure you're signed in to the same Stremio profile. If it's still missing, install it from your dashboard on that device and restart Stremio.
- Subtitles out of sync: use Stremio's subtitle delay controls. If the drift changes during the video, the stream and the subtitle source don't match, so try another release.
- Want different languages or settings: create a new install link with the new settings, install it, then revoke the old one.
Start with one episode
Don't plan a curriculum. Choose a show you'd watch anyway, turn on Bridge, and do the recap when the credits roll. That's the whole method.
